With the current rice shortage that the country is facing, the demand for NFA rice has become more and more apparent.

The City Government of Catbalogan is addressing this crisis by selling rice at a price that is considerably cheaper and more affordable than those sold in the public market. The NFA rice rates at 25 pesos per kilo in the Mercado but the LGU of Catbalogan sells it at 18.25 pesos per kilo. They are able to do this by adapting the Tindahan Natin - Rolling Store System in which case, they are not only able to help stabilize the price of rice but they are also able to render this service to the far - flung barangays in Catbalogan City. Adapting the said system entailed selling and literally bringing the sacks of rice to the barangays where transportation is an issue.

This started last April of this year at 25 bags of rice per day with each bag consisting of 50 kilos, three times a week. But now due to its high demand, this increased to 100 bags of rice sold each day, thrice a week. The rolling store purchases 300 bags of rice that they sell on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, at the Catbalogan City Hall. They would sell up to 70 bags on those days and the remaining 30 bags would be reserved to be brought to the predetermined barangays on the following day.

Each customer is only allowed to purchase a maximum of 5 kilos so as to make sure that everyone gets the chance to avail the more affordable but same quality NFA rice sold in the market. It is estimated that an average of 1000 people avails of the rice per selling day.

Prices of primary commodities never stop swelling up and people need to save what they possibly can to help them get by. This scheme was meant to lessen the burden caused by the never ending rice price hike in the Catbalogan market.
