LGU PICKS 650 SCHOLARS
May 23, 2008 |
The City Government has selected 650 youths as beneficiaries of its Scholarship Program which will be launched this June 2 at the City Plaza.
Of this number, 490 have already been fully assessed. They were picked out from 23 barangays. All of the identified scholars are incoming high school students and came from low-income families.
LGU will already provide for the scholars' tuition fee, bags, school supplies, shoes and uniform. Expenses for school projects will also be shouldered by the LGU.
In return, parents of scholars should be willing to shoulder expenses for other school needs such as transportation fare and allowance. Parents must also agree to closely monitor the studies of their child.
A child must be able to maintain a passing grade in order to remain as LGU scholar. He or she is required to submit his or her report card to determine this. A social worker assigned to their area will also monitor the academic progress of the student.
Another important consideration used by the CSWDO in identifying the scholars was the parents' willingness to participate in the CSWDO's activities which will include trainings on effective parenting.
This is the pilot implementation of the City Government's Scholarship Program and was made possible through the coordination between the City Mayor's Office and the CSWDO.
