A GLIMPSE INTO THE PAST
June 05, 2008

Ever wondered how Catbaloganons entertained themselves in the olden days?

Find a clue in "Baranggiay ha Catbalogan," an inter-clustered barangay cultural competition which will feature old Waray-waray forms of music and literature.

The different areas of competition and their dates are as follows - Siday, June 2; Ismaylingay, June 3; curacha, June 4 and sayawit, June 5.

This four-day event will be held at the city plaza from 7:00 in the evening to 12:00 midnight.

Siday is the waray-waray form of poetry while Ismalingay is the art of conversing through song. Curacha on the other hand is a popular waray-waray folkdance usually performed in social functions. Sayawit is a song and dance number.

For this competition, the 57 barangays of Catbalogan city were divided into 5 clusters namely poblacion, upland, island, north and south.

The upland cluster consists of Barangays Cagudalo, Palanyogon, Bangon, Manguihay, Lobo, Libas, San Andres, Cagusipan, Cagutian, Totoringon, Cawayan and Albalate.

The poblacion cluster is made up of Barangays 1-13 as well as Muñoz, Guindapunan, Mercedes, San Pablo and Canlapwas.

Those included in the island cluster are Barangays Rama, Cinco, Cagutsan, Bulu-An, Manguihay, Bagongon, Mombon and Canhawan Gote

The northern cluster consists of Barangays Maulong, Payao, Pupua, Silanga, San Roque, Estaka Buri, Cabugawan, Iguid, Old Mahayag and New Mahayag.

The southern cluster is represented by Barangays Basiao, Guinsorongan, Darahuway Daco, Darahuway Gote, Pangdan, Ibol, Lagundi, Socorro and Bunu-anan.
