Drainage structures are also being repaired as part of the city's flood control program. The structures were made wider and deeper to be able to take in as much water and prevent it from spilling over into the roads and highways.
Repair and rehabilitation of the drainage structure in Brgy. Muņoz and Brgy. San Pablo has already been completed. It has since reduced the flooding in the aforementioned areas as well as in Brgy. Canlapwas and Brgy. 11 Poblacion.
On the other hand, the rehabilitation of the drainage in Curry Avenue has already started. The project is divided into two itineraries: the portion of Hall of Justice corner San Bartolome and the portion of corner San Bartolome St. to Pier 1. With its coverage, the project is expected to reduce the floods by 99%.
Flooding is one of the serious problems faced in Catbalogan during rainy season. Aside from having small drainage structures which cannot hold the waters, clogging caused by poor waste disposal habits has aggravated this problem.
Although the LGU resorted to regular declogging as a temporary option, rehabilitation of the drainage structures was seen as the long term solution. At the same time, the drainage rehabilitation project also serves a secondary purpose of prolonging the lifespan of the newly-repaired roads by keeping the waters away from them.
