The opening of the Catbalogan City Division was marked by simple rites last July 22, 2008 in the presence of city officials and administrators of schools from the different districts of Catbalogan.
Starting with a thanksgiving mass, the day's commemoration proceeded with a motorcade and was highlighted by the ceremonial ribbon cutting and the switching on of the City Division Signboard led by Mayor Coefredo T. Uy, thereby officially opening the city division office located above the Taby's Fastfood.
Also present during the event were Ms. Corazon Abella, Education Supervisor II of the Department of Education Regional Office to represent Regional Director Sol T. Matugas, and Samar Division Superintendent Alfredo Dacuro
Dacuro was serving as the concurrent City Division Superintendent during the said event. He has since been replaced by Dr. Elenita Advincula as the permanent Superintendent of the City Division. She assumed office last August 11, 2008.
In his inspirational message, Mayor Uy said that with its own Schools Division, Catbalogan City will be able to focus more on the task of providing quality education to its students. With this, he took the opportunity to thank the people working in the city's educational system for their efforts and contributions.
The whole affair was organized by Mr. Antonio Caveiro, Principal of the Samar National School which is also the host school for the first meeting of the Division Management Committee (MANCOM) held on the afternoon of the same day.
The establishment of a separate schools division office for Catbalogan City is stated in Section 50 of Republic Act 9391 which is also known as "An Act Converting the Municipality of Catbalogan into a Component City of the Province Of Samar."
The Catbalogan City Division has already been in operation since June 23, 2008. It presently has a workforce numbering 35 consisting of 1 superintendent, 9 supervisors and 25 non-teaching personnel.
